The old photographs, scattered on the table, seemed to stare back at Liam. Each image was a reminder of a life that was gone, a life lived within these walls. He felt a lump in his throat, a tightness that prevented him from speaking. He felt exposed, vulnerable.

He kept glancing at the hallway, at the shadowed doorway leading to the basement. He didn't want to go down there. He knew there was nothing down there, but his mind insisted on the worst possibilities.

He rose from the chair, a surge of adrenaline coursing through his veins. He just needed to get out, to be anywhere else. He reached for his jacket, his hands trembling slightly.
