"You can stay with me tonight," her friend had said. “You don’t have to do this alone.” But Clara hadn’t been able to say yes. She had to be here. She had to witness the final act. She had to face the inevitable. Her legs felt leaden.

She watched the final blow land, the house shuddering and then crumbling. Her breath caught in her throat. The world blurred. She wanted to reach out, to grab hold of something, anything, but there was nothing to grasp. She felt utterly and completely lost.
