The blueprints lay scattered across the table, worthless now. A cold wave rolled over him, leaving his insides hollow. John felt his throat close up. He pushed back from the table, the sudden movement causing his chair to scrape against the floor. He focused on the details of the room, counting the tiles on the floor, trying to find some purchase on solid ground. The sound of his own shallow breathing filled his ears. His mind raced, a trapped animal desperate for an escape.
