"Just go in there," his mother had said. But now, as he stood before the door to the coach's office, Ben found himself frozen. He felt a cold sweat prickle at the back of his neck. The wood of the door felt strangely cold under his fingertips. He imagined a thousand possible scenarios playing out. The silence on the other side of the door was the loudest thing he'd ever heard.

He took a shaky breath, telling himself it would all be over soon. His vision blurred as he considered the things he had worked so hard for. He thought of his teammates, the friends that he’d made. His fingers trembled as he lifted his hand to knock.
