Gemotions

The aroma of chlorine seemed to intensify as Emily stood before the pool, Coach Johnson’s gaze boring into her. She could feel the stares of her teammates, their curiosity a palpable presence. She felt like she was trapped in a spotlight. She knew why she had been asked to stay after practice, why the coach had requested the empty pool.

She nervously adjusted her goggles. The water, normally a source of comfort, now seemed like an abyss. Her breathing became shallow and rapid. She could feel her legs turn to jelly, threatening to fail. She was a fish out of water.
