The email sat in the inbox, a digital serpent coiled to strike. Her hands, clammy and trembling, hovered over the delete button. Her breath hitched, shallow and rapid, as she paced the length of her apartment, a caged animal desperate for an escape.

The phone rang, the shrill noise slicing through the suffocating silence. It was her mother, cheerfully inquiring about her day. A forced smile cracked her face. "Everything's fine, Mom," she managed, her voice tight and unfamiliar. She ended the call quickly, the weight of the secret pressing down on her with renewed intensity.
