The newspaper lay on the floor, the offending article crumpled and discarded. Amelia felt a profound unease settle in her stomach, a knot of icy tension. She'd always loved this author, his lyrical prose, his poignant insights. Now, confronted with the blatant plagiarism, her admiration had curdled into a bitter resentment.

She sat on the sofa, clutching a pillow to her chest, as if seeking protection. Her gaze flickered around the room, as if searching for an escape route. The familiar objects – the photographs, the books – seemed to judge her, to silently accuse her of her misplaced loyalty.

Her phone buzzed with an incoming call from her literary agent. She let it ring, the sound grating on her nerves. She couldn't face anyone, couldn't articulate the jumble of conflicting emotions swirling inside her. She wanted to scream, to lash out, but the words were trapped in her throat, a silent scream she couldn’t utter.
