The news broke like a thunderclap. Every word on the article, every stolen sentence, felt like a personal betrayal. She’d always considered this author a mentor, someone whose work inspired her. Now, she felt a corrosive anger eat through her.

Her breath came in ragged gasps. She stood frozen in the middle of her living room, her vision swimming. She couldn’t seem to focus, the world around her blurring and distorting. She wanted to scream, to shatter the objects around her.

Her hands moved on their own, finding the nearest picture of the man. She ripped the picture to shreds, the sound of the paper tearing strangely satisfying. Then, she let it fall, her legs giving way and she crumpled to the floor.
