He reread the excerpt, his blood running cold. The story he'd toiled over, poured his heart into, was now being published under someone else’s name. A feeling of dread took hold of him, freezing his limbs. This was a nightmare from which he couldn’t wake.

He sat bolt upright in his chair, his heart hammering in his chest. His apartment, once a sanctuary, now seemed to press in on him, the walls closing in. He felt the impulse to run, to escape this cruel reality.

His gaze darted around the room, searching for a distraction, a lifeline. Finding none, he buried his face in his hands, unable to process the betrayal. The weight of it threatened to crush him.
