The email sat in Eleanor’s inbox, a tiny white flag against the storm of her ambition. Her fingers, usually nimble on the keyboard, now hovered, trembling. She opened the message, the words blurring as her vision swam. Her breath hitched, a thin, shallow thing in her chest. She reread the polite rejection, the polite dismissal of her years of work, the polite shattering of her hopes. Her lower lip began to tremble, a silent earthquake in her face.

She slumped in her chair, the sudden absence of any support making her feel weightless. Her stomach twisted, a knot of cold metal forming inside. She glanced around the room, at the stacks of books, the notebooks overflowing with her scrawled thoughts. The walls seemed to be closing in, the air thick and oppressive. Each object, once a source of comfort, now mocked her, silent witnesses to her perceived failure.
