Gemotions

The librarian handed Maya the box. Inside, amongst other forgotten things, was a letter she had written to her best friend, a friend she hadn't spoken to in years. She felt a sudden, sharp pang of something unpleasant as she held it.

She remembered the context: a school trip, a fight, a misunderstanding. The letter was an apology. A plea for reconciliation. She swallowed hard, her mouth suddenly dry.

Her heart began to pound a steady rhythm in her chest. The memory of that time, of the raw emotions, overwhelmed her. She felt like she was standing on a cliff edge, looking down.
