The letter arrived in the mail. A formal notice, detailing changes to benefits, including a section about potential restructuring. Her heart hammered against her ribs.

She sat on the sofa, clutching the letter, the paper crinkling in her grasp. The house, usually a sanctuary, felt alien and cold. The familiar scent of her own home no longer comforted her.

She stared out the window, at the setting sun, at the world continuing, oblivious to the seismic shift in her own existence. The world had tilted on its axis, and she was clinging on, trying not to be flung off.
