He felt the metallic tang of fear flood his mouth. It was just a wrong number. A single, innocuous message meant for Sarah, meant to be playful. Now it was in the hands of his ex-wife, Katherine. He should have never sent that text. He gripped his phone so tight his knuckles ached. “I… I didn’t mean it,” he mumbled to the silent device. He was across the city, far away from her, but the thought of her angry glare, the venom in her voice, made his stomach churn. He considered turning his phone off, burying it deep in a drawer, just to make the threat disappear.
