The lights flickered and died, and the elevator shuddered to a stop. His stomach lurched. It felt like falling, even though he knew they weren't moving. David’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird.

"Well, this is just great," Sarah said, her voice tight. He watched her pace the small space, a restless energy emanating from her. He leaned against the railing, trying to keep his breathing even.

The silence was almost worse than the darkness. He imagined all the things that could go wrong, all the unseen dangers lurking beyond the metal walls. He felt the familiar prickle of goosebumps on his arms.
