The metallic box lurched and ground to a halt. He felt the blood drain from his face. John looked at the emergency phone, his hand trembling as he reached for it.

"Probably just a glitch," Maria said, trying to sound reassuring. He could see the effort in her face. The phone, predictably, was dead. He felt a wave of dizziness wash over him.

He focused on his breathing, trying to calm the racing pulse in his neck. The walls seemed to be closing in, the air becoming difficult to draw. He imagined all the possible scenarios, each one more unpleasant than the last.
