The casual chatter of the team lunch was a cacophony to Liam. When he realized that Charlotte, the intern, had mentioned Camp Shadow Creek, he had an urge to disappear. He felt the blood drain from his face. He quickly reached for a glass of water, his hand shaking.

He’d always thought he was safe, secure in his silence. Now, it felt like the ground beneath him had started to crumble. He pushed his food around his plate, his appetite gone. He wanted to scream at her to stop, to not mention those woods, those nights.

His heart pounded in his chest, a frantic drumbeat against his ribs. The laughter around the table, the sunshine streaming in the window, all seemed to mock his inner turmoil.
