He stared at the eviction notice, his jaw clenching. He felt a cold sweat prickling his skin. The cheap linoleum floor felt suddenly unstable beneath his feet. He had worked so hard to make this place a home. He'd painted the walls, hung the pictures, and nurtured a small collection of plants.

His pulse quickened. He started pacing, back and forth, from the window to the door. Each stride felt like a test, each turn a battle. His hands were clasped behind his back, fingers digging into his palms. He didn’t know how he would tell his children.

He went to the window, and stared at the street below, at the bustling lives of the people who were not facing the same fate.
