The flickering candlelight cast dancing shadows across the room as Maya unfolded the letter. It was her aunt’s, penned long before Maya was born, a confession hidden amongst family heirlooms. She was supposed to be looking for a specific will, but the letter snagged her attention immediately.

She read, the words a knife twisting in her gut. Her aunt, a woman she had revered for her independence, was leaving a lucrative career because of something she couldn’t bear. Each sentence was a testament to the weight of a decision, a burden of truth.

The air in the room thickened, making it hard to breathe. Her fingers tightened around the paper, her knuckles turning white. The weight of her aunt’s unspoken pain was crushing. The walls seemed to be closing in. She felt a desperate need to retreat, to escape the suffocating presence of the past.
