"So, that's it then?" Mark asked, his voice strained. His entire body felt heavy, as though gravity had intensified. He leaned against the brick wall of the coffee shop, trying to find some semblance of stability.

Across the table, Alex nodded, a slight frown creasing his brow. "Yeah. It's happening." Mark’s mouth was dry. He could feel his heart hammering against his ribs. The world seemed to tilt on its axis.

He fiddled with the straw in his empty cup, a nervous tic. He felt the phantom weight of Alex's absence already, a chilling void that yawned before him. A terrible sense of isolation began to creep into his thoughts.
