Gemotions

The dog started barking, a frantic series of yips. I was sprawled on the couch, watching television, when the sudden cacophony startled me. Then came the sound, a monstrous groan followed by a sickening thud. The lights flickered.

I sat bolt upright, every muscle tense. My heart was a frantic drumbeat in my chest. I quickly stood, feeling the blood drain from my face. I had to know what was going on. I stumbled towards the window, my legs unsteady.

The scene outside was a chaotic mess. The ancient oak, a landmark of the neighborhood, lay in ruin. My hand flew up to cover my mouth. A wave of dizziness washed over me. I needed to get out of the house.
