The old house felt colder than usual. She shivered, even though the thermostat was set high. The letter lay on the table, a stark white rectangle against the dark wood. She didn’t know how to deal with this.

She wandered from room to room, unable to find any comfort. The silence of the empty house pressed in on her. The shadows seemed to dance, to shift, to watch.

She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to ward off the chill. She felt paralyzed, unable to move, unable to think. She felt like a trapped animal, waiting for the inevitable. The past had returned.
