He stared at the photograph, a grainy image of a young woman with his father’s eyes and a smile he couldn’t place. A chill snaked down his spine, leaving goosebumps on his arms. This… this was impossible. He’d known his father his whole life. They’d built model airplanes together, gone fishing, shared inside jokes.

He reread the letter, the legal jargon now a menacing tide threatening to engulf him. His breath hitched in his throat. His entire identity felt suddenly precarious, like a house of cards ready to collapse. He slammed the letter down, the sound echoing in the silent apartment.

He paced the length of the room, his agitation growing with each step. His hands clenched and unclenched. He needed to understand, but the thought of confrontation, of the lies he might discover, made him want to flee. The very air around him seemed to thicken with a menacing weight. He stopped, frozen mid-stride, staring at his own shadow stretching across the floor.
