The flickering screen illuminated Amelia’s face as she stared at the bank statement. A lump formed in her throat, making it difficult to swallow. The numbers swam before her eyes; the account balance, the hidden transactions. Her fingers trembled as she reached for her phone, dialing her best friend Sarah’s number. She took a deep, shuddering breath before the call connected.

“Sarah, can you talk?” Amelia’s voice cracked. “There’s something… I need to tell you.” The silence on the other end felt thick, heavy, like a physical weight pressing down on her chest.

Amelia ran a hand through her hair, her movements jerky. The air in the room suddenly felt thin, as though it was struggling to reach her lungs. She kept rereading the statement, hoping it would somehow change, but the numbers remained, a stark reminder of the unknown.
