The news report crackled from the radio, detailing the art heist. A priceless Van Gogh, stolen from a private collection. Then, the camera panned to a photo: The opulent home of Mr. Silas, her next-door neighbor, who was named as a person of interest.

A jolt ran through her, leaving her suddenly lightheaded. She recalled his odd hours, his secretive phone calls, his aversion to any conversation about his past. He always seemed to be watching, even when he wasn't.

She found herself unable to breathe, her vision swimming. She moved to the window, the image of his house, usually so comforting, now filled her with apprehension. She pulled the curtains shut, but the shadows still seemed to be closing in.
