“This can’t be happening,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. The news report on the television screen flickered, the words a cruel reality. I pressed the heels of my hands into my eyes, trying to dispel the image. A wave of dizziness washed over me.

I gripped the edge of the kitchen table, seeking something to steady myself. The thought of my future, the carefully laid plans, crumbling before my eyes, felt like a physical blow. The apartment felt suffocating, closing in.

I ran to the window, throwing it open, gulping down the fresh air, trying to slow the racing of my heart. The world outside, usually comforting, now seemed alien and distant. I felt utterly and completely lost.
