He heard the crunch of gravel outside, a sound that made him freeze. He’d been enjoying the silence, the way the sunlight fell across the living room. Now, the quiet felt brittle, ready to shatter. He peeked through the blinds, his breath catching in his throat. It was Mr. Henderson, the new neighbor.

Mr. Henderson pointed at the edge of his property, a hopeful look on his face. He beckoned for him to come out.

He gripped the edge of the blinds so tightly his knuckles were white. The invitation, the request – it felt intrusive, a violation of his carefully constructed peace. He felt his stomach tighten.
