The email shimmered on her phone screen, the subject line a brutal punch to the gut: "Your Essay Featured in 'Exceptional College Applications'!" Her breath hitched. She nearly dropped the phone, fingers fumbling for purchase on the smooth, cold glass.

A wave of heat crashed over her. She gripped the edge of the kitchen counter, knuckles white. The words on the page blurred, the bright sunlight outside suddenly too harsh, too intrusive. Everything felt loud, the ticking of the clock on the wall, the hum of the refrigerator.

"Well, this is... unexpected," her mother said, walking into the kitchen. Her smile faltered as she saw her daughter's face. "What's wrong?" Her voice was soft, laced with concern.

She wanted to say something, anything, but her throat felt constricted, like something was lodged there. She shook her head, unable to meet her mother's gaze, feeling like she was being watched, judged. The words she'd spilled onto that page felt raw, exposed, and now, accessible to everyone.
