Gemotions

The email arrived, a digital slap in the face. "We regret to inform you..." Blah blah blah. David got the job. Of course, he did. He’s always been the golden boy. Everything comes easy to him.

I threw my phone onto the bed. The plastic casing felt slick against my palm. I stared at the ceiling, trying to breathe evenly. I hated this feeling, this knot that had settled in my stomach.

Later, I saw him at the pub, already surrounded by the other successful candidates, laughing. I couldn’t even bring myself to make eye contact. He saw me, waved, and called out, "Come join us!" I pretended not to hear and walked away.
