The wedding band was playing a sappy love song. Perfect. Jessica rolled her eyes, her lips twisting into a thin line as she watched Mark on the dance floor, his arm around a smiling woman who wasn’t her.

She excused herself from the conversation she was having and moved towards the buffet table, inspecting the miniature quiches with a deliberate thoroughness. Each tiny pastry became a target of her unspoken ire, poked and prodded with a fork.

He walked past her, his gaze sweeping over her, as if he was unsure who she was. "Jessica," he said, a pleasantry in his voice. She gave a curt nod. "Mark," she replied, her tone neutral, devoid of any feeling. The woman next to him beamed. Jessica looked at the ground.
