He’d left his phone on the charger again. She hated this. She stared at the screen, the temptation a tangible thing, a physical pull. It was always the same thing. The same quick, fleeting glimpses of his true self. She hadn't wanted to break in, but she had to know, and the urge had become a compulsion.

She unlocked it, her heart hammering against her ribs. The messages, the calls, the names, none were new. Her gaze moved over them, each one a fresh wave of something cold in her gut. She’d known. She’d felt the distance, the disconnect. The phone merely confirmed what her intuition had already told her.

A slow, bitter smile formed on her lips. She wasn’t surprised. She just wanted it to be over.
