Across the room, Chloe was holding court, reliving their college days when she'd allegedly "discovered" a particular artist. Her narrative was a self-aggrandizing mess, conveniently omitting David's crucial contribution to the artist's early success.

He observed her from the shadows, a bitter taste coating his tongue. Her eyes sparkled with an almost unbearable self-satisfaction. The way she gestured with her hands, the way she tilted her head to garner attention - it all grated.
