The coffee cup trembled in Amelia's hand as she read the notes: chronic back pain, opioid dependence, a history of self-harm. Not *her* life. Certainly not the life she'd so meticulously constructed, one of yoga retreats and organic kale smoothies. The nurse, a young woman with a nervous smile, kept apologizing, her voice a thin, reedy stream.

Amelia dismissed her with a wave of a perfectly sculpted hand. It wasn't the nurse's fault, of course. It was the system, the carelessness. But the anger burned within her, a slow, steady fire. She thought of her upcoming charity gala, the meticulously planned seating arrangements, the perfectly curated guest list. This… this mess… threatened to unravel everything.
