The delivery man, with his apologetic expression, just stood there holding the untouched flowers and the uneaten cake, their sweet scent doing nothing to soothe the bitterness that filled Emily. She waved him away, a dismissive gesture. The elaborate decorations were already starting to wilt, the streamers drooping. She felt a tight knot in her stomach, a feeling of being betrayed.
