Gemotions

The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the overgrown lawn. My sister, Olivia, was inside, apparently marveling at a collection of porcelain dolls. I stayed on the porch, my arms crossed, watching the light fade.

I took a cigarette out of the pack I hadn't smoked in months, and lit it. The nicotine settled on my nerves, bringing no relief. This whole thing was a mistake. A massive, complicated mistake.

I watched the smoke drift away, imagining the possibilities. Selling, of course, was the most obvious. Renovating, she'd already started on a plan.
I ground my teeth together.
