He scanned the invitation, a curl of his lip forming almost imperceptibly. The photograph on the front featured smiling faces, the memory of which created a sharp pain. He tossed the invitation into the fireplace, and watched as it slowly started to burn.

He remembered the constant feeling of inadequacy, the social hierarchies, the casual cruelty. He remembered the feeling of being trapped, desperately wanting to escape.

He could feel the heat on his face as the paper blackened and curled. He felt a sense of perverse satisfaction as the flames consumed the image. Good riddance.
