He stared at his brother, Thomas, across the kitchen table, the antique pocket watch, a legacy from their grandfather, gleaming in the harsh fluorescent light. Thomas, beaming, detailed the auction house's projected profits. "Think of the freedom, Ben! Finally, a chance to get that boat you've always wanted." The casual disregard for the watch's sentimental value choked him. Freedom for Thomas, certainly. For Ben, it was another shove toward oblivion. He clenched his jaw, the muscles tightening in his neck. The boat wasn't the point. It never was.
