The house, her childhood home, was a mess. Years of neglect had taken their toll. The new owners had a right to tear it down. Even so, he felt the sting of it.

He drove past the place every day on his way to work. He’d told himself he wouldn't stop. He told himself it didn’t matter. He was a man with a successful career and a beautiful wife. *He was better off.*

Today he had stopped. He sat in his luxury car, a beacon of modern success, and watched the crane swing its metal fist. He couldn't help the tremor that ran through him.
