The bus ride home was torture. Every bump in the road, every turn of the tires, seemed to mirror the turmoil inside her. The coach’s words, a polite dismissal, repeated themselves over and over in her head. She was a good player, she knew that. This felt like a betrayal, a profound sense of unfairness.

She stared out the window, watching the landscape blur by. A knot of anger tightened in her stomach. The other girls' excited chatter was a dull, irritating buzz. She closed her eyes, fighting back the tears, and resolved to prove them all wrong. She would make them regret this.
