The advisor’s apologies were like sandpaper against his already raw nerves. Marcus tried to maintain composure, but the words felt like needles pricking at him. He had chosen this school over others because of the scholarship, and now, he was left with nothing but a void.

He imagined the person who was supposed to receive the scholarship, likely someone who had the advantage of family wealth. He imagined them taking the opportunity for granted. The injustice was like a bitter taste in his mouth.

He excused himself, unable to bear the pretense any longer. As he walked across campus, the sunlight seemed harsh, and the laughter of other students grated on his ears. He wanted to scream at the sky.
