The knot in Liam’s stomach tightened with each ping of a text message. It was always about Chloe’s party, all the messages. He glanced at the flyer for his own event: a small gathering at the local brewery, focused on good beer and better conversation. Quiet. Simple. The opposite of Chloe's impending extravaganza.

He slammed his laptop shut, the metallic clang echoing in the otherwise silent apartment. He could practically hear Chloe now, her voice overly sweet, her laughter too loud, as she'd already started her birthday's celebration.

Liam grabbed his keys and stomped outside, the sudden burst of cool air doing little to soothe his rising ire. He felt a throbbing pulse in his temple, a constant pressure he couldn't quite name but could definitely feel.
