The librarian, bless her heart, had offered a consoling smile. “They get so many submissions,” she’d murmured. But Susan couldn't be appeased. She wanted to scream. She had spent years working on the book. Now the publishing house that was supposed to catapult her to stardom had delivered a curt, dismissive letter. She crumpled the rejection in her hands, her fingers flexing. She considered returning the library books, overdue as they were, and telling the woman at the desk to shove them where the sun don’t shine.
