He’d always revered his grandfather, the stoic provider, the rock of their family. Now, staring at the photograph of the man, arm in arm with a woman with a wide, infectious smile, at the picnic table, he felt a knot of anger tighten in his stomach. The carefully constructed narrative of his grandfather’s fidelity, of his unwavering devotion to his grandmother, was crumbling before his eyes. He tossed the picture back into the box, his hands shaking. The pleasant image of the man as saint, now a farce.
