The CEO’s platitudes about "new opportunities" and "synergy" washed over Sarah like a particularly unpleasant wave. She stared at him, her expression carefully neutral, while inside, a storm raged. The carefully crafted PowerPoint presentation, the slick marketing language – all felt like a mockery.

She'd known, of course. She had seen the preliminary reports, the hushed conversations in the parking lot. The way the higher-ups were preparing for their departure. But the sheer gall of the CEO, to stand there and pretend this was a good thing, a positive development… She leaned back in her chair, the leather creaking under her weight. Her lips curled into a slight grimace.
