The announcement had come during Sarah’s morning coffee, scalding the roof of her mouth with its unwelcome news. The woman, whose office door she'd practically lived in, was leaving.

Sarah stood abruptly, spilling half her coffee. The brown liquid stained the pristine white tablecloth. She muttered a curse under her breath, a low growl of displeasure.

She imagined Professor Chen packing her boxes, smiling her usual bright, infuriating smile, oblivious to the chaos she was leaving behind. Sarah's chest ached. She felt a burning need to destroy something.
