He read the notice again, meticulously parsing each sentence. The legal jargon, the cold detachment of the language – it was all designed to dehumanize him, to reduce him to a statistic. He ripped the paper in half, then tore the halves into smaller pieces, letting the bits flutter to the floor.

He paced the apartment, his hands clenched into fists. He thought of all the things he had done for the building, all the favors he had granted. It was a waste of time. He would not be used.

He would not go quietly.
