Rain lashed against the window as I stared at the moving boxes, stacked like silent, judgmental sentinels. My phone lay on the coffee table, a glowing rectangle of indifference. Liam had texted me a picture of his new apartment in Austin. Sunlight streamed through huge windows, showcasing modern furniture and a ridiculously happy grin. I wanted to smash the phone.

The air felt thick, charged with the phantom weight of his presence. We had spent years in this apartment, laughing, crying, building a life together. He’d forgotten to tell me he was selling his half of the lease. Just…forgotten.

I had been sure he'd ask my opinion. I’d believed, foolishly, that my perspective mattered. Now, all I could focus on was how easily he was walking away. The ache in my jaw was a constant reminder of how hard I was clenching my teeth.
