The weight of the silence in the car was crushing. Liam had asked me to drive him to the airport. I’d agreed, a cold, hard knot settling in my stomach. The sky was an unforgiving grey, mirroring the landscape of my feelings.

He chattered on about his plans, his voice overflowing with anticipation for Boston, as if he hadn't noticed the tense atmosphere. He spoke of new beginnings, of possibilities. I just stared straight ahead, trying not to grind my teeth.

When he finally stopped talking, I waited. He must know how I felt, I thought. He must be aware of the rift his decision had caused. As the terminal appeared on the horizon, I pulled over to the side of the road and turned off the engine, a sudden, unfamiliar weariness washing over me.
