The will was read with a formality that grated on Amelia's nerves. Her brother, David, sat beside her, radiating an almost sickening air of contentment. He was to inherit the family business, a failing chain of dry cleaners. Amelia, the successful architect, was to receive a small, inconsequential apartment in a distant city.

She crossed her arms, the expensive silk of her blouse feeling constricting. David, always the favorite, had never shown the slightest interest in their father’s business. Now, he would be the one to “save” it. Amelia felt a surge of cold fury.

Later, outside, she watched David shake hands with the solicitor, a broad grin plastered across his face. She turned away, unable to bear the sight. Her hands trembled as she hailed a cab. She would not let this ruin her. Still, the apartment felt like a cage.
