The bank statements were scattered across the kitchen table. He was going to say he was sorry. He would have an excuse. He always did. She already knew the words he would use. The well-rehearsed explanations.

She picked up a knife, examined its edge. She thought about his reaction. She thought about breaking all of the dishes. She sat down, her hands shaking, her blood pressure rising.

She needed to get out. She needed to leave the house. She needed to get some air. She needed… something.
