The small, elegant handwriting in the diary seemed to mock her. “Write a book.” “Learn to play the piano.” Sarah, her mother's only child, felt a sudden, unpleasant constriction in her chest. Her mother, a librarian who had always seemed content with her quiet life, harbored secret ambitions.

She slammed the diary shut. The neatly organized bookshelves, the soft lighting, the scent of old paper – all of it seemed oppressive now. Why hadn’t her mother pursued these dreams? Why had she stayed trapped within the confines of their predictable life?

Sarah stood up, pushing her chair back with a violent clatter. The gentle atmosphere of the room had become unbearable. She needed air, to escape the suffocating weight of unrealized dreams and the unspoken resentments she had harbored for years.
